On March 18, 1939 a short story was featured in The New Yorker called the “Secret Life of Walter Mitty” by James Thurber. It featured a husband’s vivid imagination taking flight to escape the day to day demands of his wife and the mundane traps of American middle class. Fanciful, fun and entertaining, it is a story everyone can relate too.

This short story is about Benjamin Wood. He is a suburban father of two, loving husband and dog owner in Middle America who has a lot of things to do around the house on a cold, winter Saturday morning. You may not know anyone like him but at the very least he will be familiar to you.

This short bit of flash fiction’s mix of mundane morning chores interspersed with a series of thrilling imaginative adventures makes for a surprisingly good read. Much as James Thurbur’s “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” was an important work of fiction for its time, as it examined the struggles, trials, and tribulations of those living in the 1930’s during the lead up to World War 2, this loving homage attempts to walk a similar path using potential near-future scenarios as the avenue for exploring those same fears and concerns.Although parts of the book might seem a bit too far-fetched for some, the majority of these fanciful tales have very realistic roots in the modern-day news cycle. More importantly, it’s a very human story that focuses on those key elements by which all heroes become great, through their honor, their sacrifice and their strength of spirit that pushes them to continue helping others straight to the end. “To See Behind Walls” maybe a short read, but it’s one that you will want to revisit again and again for years to come.

The "Secret life of Walter Smitty" of our time. This is such a great short story. It raises so much thought about how things have changed since the 1930s yet have stayed the same. We all want to feel important so we use our imagination during the most mundane of times. I loved the sections talking about Eboli since it was such a news story in our time. I wonder if some of these ents will have to have footnotes in the future since it seems like these "big" news stories are always so quickly fleeting. I can easily see this in future literature text books published right next to "The Secret Life of Walter Smitty" for students to see what those of us today are dealing with in the news and what we fantasize about to make ournhum drum lives a little more manageable. This is a story about today for today and tomorrow.
