Learn how professionals figure out the answers to those questions, why they come up with different answers, and what it means for you.

"The Facebook IPO Primer" is easy to navigate. Part I covers the ups and downs of hot high technology stocks; Part II reviews the Facebook culture and business plan; Part III explains five different ways that analysts pick apart Facebook finances; Part IV offers dozens of links to stories and blog posts about Facebook so you can continue learning about the social media marvel.

The Facebook IPO Primer eBook Nancy Miller

In this book Nancy Miller asks several questions and in many cases provides the framework for the reader to answer. Among my favorite is "Is it the next Google -- maybe bigger -- or is it Myspace?" It's up to the reader to decide if Facebook will follow the fate of Myspace. An excellent history of the dotcom boom/doom is provided. For those of us who remember the crazy Netscape IPO that started it all it provided an excellent framework and comparison of other big tech IPO's. There are great comparisons between Google's IPO valuation and Facebook's as well as comparisons to what Google is today and Apple. Great read - I love when an author can concisely get a lot of information across in a very easy to read manner. There are two few books that get so much accomplished without wasting the readers time with useless fluff.

The Facebook IPO Primer eBook Nancy Miller Reviews

This eBook is a great resource. It helps understand what the IPO is all about, and provides a comprehensive summary of facebook, its leadership, its financials. It helped us make our investment decision regarding the upcoming IPO. Highly recommended.
Loved this. So easy to follow and understand. I've heard so much about the Facebook "IPO" but didn't really get it. Now I do. I also have a better understanding how the IPO process works in general.
The Facebook IPO Primer is a breezy read. It skillfully tells the Facebook story (so interesting in of itself) and the story of how the market for new stocks works. And I loved the linkfest at the end so I could continue to do more research on my own.
I am not very savvy about IPOs so this was the perfect book for me. It explains how the IPO works, is extremely readable and comes with helpful charts. If you are looking to invest in Facebook or merely want to find out about this IPO, this is the book for you!
This book was a very useful, cogent summary of what the Facebook IPO is all about. It gave a clear, thoughtful presentation of the pros and cons of whether Facebook is a good investment. The book wisely just lays out the issues in very readable prose so that readers can make their own decisions.
In her very witty and clear style, Ms. Miller summmarizes everything I wanted to know about Facebook and other leading high-tech investments , IPO's, investing--and how to connect the dots among them. I find her descriptions fascinating and her analyses clear, concise, and very helpful. Haven't yet decided whether or not to take the leap and invest!
There is more money to be lost than made in most controversial IPOs, on average. Don't get me wrong, this is a good book, and the author knows what she is talking about, but whether one should buy Facebook in its IPO next month is a huge open question, and I would encourage you to read this book to think through the problem.

If you read the book, you will get a healthy dose of skepticism, mixed with the idea that many large IPOs in tech have been successful, like Google. The main idea is that you have to do due diligence. All snowflakes have six corners, but they are all different.

The book gives you five different ways to value Facebook, and those methods are all over the map, as they should be for a company where the economics are yet to be determined. At least it is profitable.

The range of valuation gives everyone something to hang onto, but the thought process should force everyone to think about how Facebook will monetize all of their users. Will the users behave in a way that allows Facebook to make money off them? So far, yes, but the future is far more volatile than I can imagine.

In general, I would advise readers to avoid IPOs. Most people lose money in buying them on the secondary markets. Better you should buy stock in less flashy businesses like utilities, insurance, and energy stocks. You will make more money there -- businesses with a high earnings yield tend to do better than other stocks, and Facebook does not make it there, for now. Buying Facebook implies a company that will grow far more rapidly than most, and far a long time, which is not common.

If you are thinking about buying shares of Facebook, spend five bucks or so, and get this book. It's less than a brokerage commission, and worth more than most in educating you about the value of Facebook.

Quibbles

None; this is a good book. What matters most is how you think about it.

Who would benefit from this book If you want to buy the Facebook IPO, buy this book and learn something. Be aware before you buy, or be dissuaded before you do nothing.
